Natterjack Toads

Natterjack Toads - © SNH For information on reproduction rights contact the Scottish Natural Heritage Image Library on 01738 444777 or at www.snh.gov.ukrrrrrrRUP!  rrrrrRUP! .. ...a strangely eerie sound if heard drifting over the mud flats on a warm summer evening, this is the the mating call of the rarest amphibian in Britain - the endangered natterjack toad.  Caerlaverock  is the only place in Scotland where they live and if you're sharp you might just catch a glimpse of one, with its distinctive orange stripe on its back, speedily running, not hopping like other toads, from burrow to burrow, seeking out its prey - beetles, spiders, snails and worms.
